Sports memorabilia hits the block in Collect.com Auctions event

Hoards of sports cards, sports-related art and memorabilia highlight the Collect.com Sports and Americana Auction.

The Internet-only auction closes at 9 p.m. Central on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010. It also features a variety of toys, presidential items, antiques and entertainment collectibles.

Some of the keynote sports-related lots (with minimum bids listed in parentheses) include:
• An autographed Cal Ripken and Sachio Kinugasa framed original oil painting by Frank Stapleton ($3,000)
• An autographed painting of Mark McGwire by artist W. Delaney ($2,500)
• A bronze sculpture of Mickey Mantle by artist C. Brown ($2,400)
• A lot of 150 lithographs from the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame class of 1983 ($2,250)
• An oil painting of Tom Seaver by Stapleton ($2,000)
• An oil painting of Muhammad Ali by Stapleton ($2,000)
• A bronze bust of Babe Ruth by artist P. Murphy ($2,000).
Jackie Robinson fans can have their pick of a pair of great memorabilia pieces: a single-signed Cambridge official league baseball ($1,000) or a 1967 check signed by the baseball great ($700).
Other memorabilia highlights include:
• A 1948 Leaf Joe DiMaggio No. 1 Card, PSA 3 ($700);
• A Muhammad Ali-signed Everlast boxing glove ($500);
• A circa 1980 Baseball Hall of Famers multi-signed baseball, which includes Ted Williams’ signature ($500);
• A Brooks Robinson jersey signed by members of the World Series champion 1970 Baltimore Orioles. ($500);
• An autographed, limited-edition framed and matted lithograph depicting Muhammad Ali in a bout against Sonny Liston. ($400);
• A 1976 NFL Pro Bowl team-signed football featuring 37 signatures from team members including Joe Greene, O.J. Simpson, Jack Lambert, Mel Blount and Ray Guy. ($300);
• A Louisville slugger bat signed by Ted Williams. ($300)
Card collectors can get a lot of bang for the buck with several card hoards. Highlighting the list is:
• A hoard of more than 3,400 Topps baseball cards from 1982 contained in 96 unopened packs. Minimum bid: $500.
• A 60,000-plus hoard of assorted baseball cards from the 1970s and 1980s. A quick survey of the hoard yielded three 1979 Ozzie Smith rookie cards, a 1980 Rickey Henderson rookie card, a 1978 Eddie Murray rookie card, a Dennis Eckersley rookie card and several 1975 Jim Rice and Fred Lynn rookie cards. Minimum bid: $100.
• A 4,000-card hoard of baseball cards from the 1960s through the 1990s, with the majority being Topps cards from the 1970s. Minimum bid: $50.
• A hoard of 3,500 Topps football cards from the 1970s to the 1980s. Minimum bid: $50.
• A 5,000-plus hoard of 1970s hockey and basketball cards. Minimum bid: $50.
• A 10,000-plus hoard of 1973-1986 football cards. Minimum bid: $50.
• A hoard of 300 unopened packs of baseball, basketball and hockey cards from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Minimum bid: $10.
Roughly one-third of the auction’s roughly 900 lots have budget-friendly minimum bids of $25 or less, including:
• A Toronto Maple Leafs NHL puck signed by Darryl Sittler;
• A 1956 Baseball Encyclopedia and 1954 World Series Record Book;
• A lot of 43 felt pennants for NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL teams including the Green Bay Packers, Boston Celtics, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Red Wings;
• A pair of Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte Columbus Clippers bobble heads;
• A lot of four Hallmark Christmas baseball-hero ornaments featuring Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson
• An 8” x 10” color photograph of Yogi Berra
• An O-Pee-Chee 1988 rookie card for Brett Hull graded PSA Mint 9.
• Complete boxed sets of the first 15 series of Perez-Steele Galleries baseball postcards. The cards are in EX-MT to NR-MT condition.
